PCA member company Heidelberg Materials North America unveiled its cutting-edge cement plant on June 12, 2023, in Mitchell, Indiana, a $600-million investment showcasing advanced technology and sustainability. The plant's 2.4-million ton per year capacity significantly reduces CO2 emissions and energy consumption, while more than tripling current production levels. The state-of-the-art facility, the newest in North America, is the most technologically advanced and sustainable plant built to date by Heidelberg Materials.
Dr. Dominik von Achten, CEO of Heidelberg Materials, Chris Ward, president and CEO of Heidelberg Materials North America, and various federal, state, and local government officials, business leaders, and community representatives were present to participate in the ribbon-cutting ceremony. The plant is the largest capital investment in Heidelberg Materials’ 150-year history and the second-largest single cement production facility in North America.
The Mitchell plant efficiently serves the growing market demand and future customer needs. It opens on the heels of the 2021 passage of the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act. With the increased capacity and commitment to efficient delivery, Heidelberg Materials is improving the facility's distribution process. The company brought on an additional 1,000 rail cars to serve the newly renovated rail yard near the site. The new distribution terminal accommodates 32,000 tons of additional cement storage.
